So much for that totally"open-source" Android operating system. Does anyone remember Google criticizing Apple for it's"closed" iOS platform? Wasit really that long ago that Google was bragging that Android was completely open and that all phone manufacturers could customize Android to theirheart's desire? Well it appears that Google has had a change of heart.
According to Bloomberg's BusinessWeek, "a dozen executives working at key companies in the Android ecosystem" have revealed that Google is trying to gain control of their customizations by forcing partners to submit to Google's approval before being allowed to get early access to upcoming builds of the OS. This sounds like something Microsoft or Apple would do. I thought Google was different.
"Some of those affected include LG, Toshiba, Samsung, and even Facebook, which has been trying to develop an Android device. There havebeen enough run-ins to trigger complaints with the Justice Dept., accordingto a person familiar with the matter."
Google claims that they're just trying to fight fragmentation and ensure quality control, but open means open doesn't it? Apparently not.
